While I appreciate that deMause uses historical sources in order to support his psychogenetic theory, in which he tries to include the actual cultural development, he unfortunately fails to acknowledge the interrelation between the cultural and psychological development. (...) He explicitly declares that the evolution of the parent-child-relationship... Psychological change occurs independently from of social and technological change. [...] Should we not rather instead understand these practices in their psychodynamic function for the supporting adjustment to the respective society? [...]
