Since the hotel capacity in Germersheim
is limited, the deadline for room reservations via the conference organizers
had been May 31, 1999. After that date, you have to make your own reservation,
but the organizers will still try to help in case of difficulties. Please
find below a list of hotels together with their reservation status (we
are grateful for any updates). All hotels located in Germersheim are within
walking distance from the conference site (see map
for location of the hotels), the others in the surrounding villages and
towns.
Important notice: All hotel reservations
are binding. In the case of a cancellation, a hotel can charge up to 80%
of the room rate if no other guest can be found.
Comments on the room situation as of August 6, 1999:
By now, all rooms in Germersheim have been booked. However, due to cancellations, there might still be a slight chance to get a room even at hotels marked "no vacancies". There is no chance in the student's residence and in private rooms.
This is our recommendation: If you have a car you will have no problems finding a room within a distance of 8 km in the surrounding villages, e.g. in Lingenfeld or in Schwegenheim, see list below. All others should book in Speyer, which is the neighboring town 15 km north of Germersheim. There are still plenty of beds available in Speyer (see list and pointer below). If there is demand, we will provide free bus transport from Speyer "Messplatz/Festplatz" (this is a large parking lot close to the Cathedral with most hotels within walking distance) to the conference site in Germersheim and vice versa (morning and evening only). However, please make sure that you inform us in advance if you intend to use this bus (the size of the bus will depend on the number of requests).
We believe that you will not regret staying in Speyer. It is the town Germany's former Chancellor Kohl used to come to on the occasion of other state leader's visits. Speyer offers a beautiful old town centre, the UNESCO-protected Cathedral (Kaiserdom), the Museum of Technology (with two IMAX-theatres) and the Historical Museum featuring the temporary exhibition "Schätze ferner Welten" (Treasures from Distant Worlds). In particular, we recommend a visit to the old town festival in Speyer which takes place on Sept. 10 and 11 (just after the conference).
During the day, there are train connections
between Speyer and Germersheim approximately every 30 minutes. Inside Speyer,
you can get around on the main routes with a shuttle bus. A day ticket
for the shuttle bus costs only 1 DM (free with any train ticket).
